The Nigerian Government to say the least appears to be too weak and lacking the capability to stem the tide of the Islamic fundamentalism besieging Northeast Nigeria called Boko Haram for over five years. Their intention is to implant sharia law and forceful conversion to Islam. In a recent video posted on youtube, Sheik Shekau the leader of this evil sect said, “My brothers cut the throats of infidels. You will soak the earth with the blood of infidels. We will kill and kill. The smell of infidels is enough. If you repent and embrace Islam I will spare you,” he boasted openly with armed followers in front of armored vehicles.

On the abduction of these innocent schoolgirls, he admitted that his group was responsible for the act. He had earlier warned all girls in particular to desist from going to school and get married instead as early as the age of nine or face the consequences if caught. “Leave going to school. I will sell women who go to school. I will sell you off as slaves. God has commanded me to sell women”, he said with beaming smiles of an indomitable conqueror in the video. The most annoying thing is that no one seems to know exactly how many girls were abducted from the dormitories in the dead of night in the Government Girls Secondary School Chibok in Askira Local Government of Borno State Nigeria.

The secondary school girls, who were abducted by members of Boko Haram, were among the over 300 boarders at the government secondary school and were sitting for the ongoing WAEC/SSCE (High School Certificate) when they were forcibly taken away from the school to an unknown destination. Some of the girls managed to escape but it is still reported that 276 girls are in Boko Haram captivity. Some unverified claims have stated that the girls have been forced to convert to Islam and married off to the tune of
10 euro each paid to the abductors while 2 are reported to have died from snakebites. Analysts who have experienced life in such camps have said these girls will definitely experience torture and rape while undertaking servile work for the insurgents.  The terrorist group had attacked many schools in the Northeast including St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary Shuwa, killing scores of students and the teaching staff in the past few months.

This Jihadist group Boko Haram is the main threat to Nigeria’s security. The country happens to be Africa’s leading energy producer and recently has risen to the biggest economy in the continent. Despite the economic growth and the income from oil most Nigerians are living below the poverty line because of corruption and greed of the ruling elite.

The kidnapping took place on the same day a bomb blast, also blamed on Boko Haram killed 75 people in Nyanya Motor Park in the suburb of Abuja, the first attack on the capital in two years.

The group’s name means “Western education is sinful” and Shekau in the video made reference to the fact that the girls were undergoing Western style education forbidden by his Jihadist sect.

It has been alleged that the militants are fighting hard to reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in northern Nigeria. Last week again, they carried out another bomb attack in the same area, killing 19 people and wounding 34 in the same Nyanya.

Church are going in the demonstrations “BringBackOurGirls”

The girls’ abduction has been a big embarrassment to the Nigerian government overshadowing its first hosting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) for Africa on 7-9 May and the global outcry and anger shown in the demonstrations BringBackOurGirls Campaigns going on right now. The world must rise to act against these violent Jihadists who are bent on stopping the attainment of education especially for the Girl child, perpetrate slavery, encourage early marriage and exterminate the Christian faith. Only 15 of the abducted girls are said to be Muslim while the rest are Christians as Chibok is largely a Christian enclave in Southern Borno in the north east of the country.

The parents of these girls remain heart broken and in tears, hoping for the best but fearing the worst because of the wickedness and evil of Boko Haram who are said to be allies of Al Qaeda and Al Shabbab. Western powers have promised to come in any moment from now to help the Nigerian authorities to find these girls and bring them back safely to their parents.

Meanwhile, the world waits in anger and anxiety in solidarity with wailing mothers of these girls hoping something good will be done with the intervention of special forces from America and elsewhere.

The Catholic Church is encouraging fervent prayers for the safe return of these girls at Parish and individual levels in the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri as Chibok falls within that ecclesiastical jurisdiction. Catholics and other Christian Groups worldwide have been called to “Pray for Nigeria’s Abducted Girls”! Rev. Dr. John Bakeni the Secretary of Maiduguri Diocese speaking earlier to BCNN1 said, “This violence continues because the militants have support from powerful people in Nigerian society.” The Church prays for God’s intervention and joins its voice to that of civil society organizations, “BringBackOurGirls”! Please join in prayer and action for the girls to come home safe and sound.
